Svanholmbua

Garvågen with a traditional stone-house, the old Rorbu to the left The Svanholmbua is situated on the island Byrknesøy, a small fishing-village with approx 500 inhabitants, in the municipality Gulen, Sogn og Fjordane County, approx 80 kilometres north of Bergen.

The area is situated at the mouth of the magnificent Sognefjorden and is a paradise for sea-fishing, diving and leisure enthusiasts, convenienty away from busy cities and tourist-traps. This area is famous for its thousands of islands and its proximity to the open sea. The Gulf-stream makes for a mild climate, even in winter.

The Gulen Fiskarbondemuseum has an interesting exhibition on life in this region in former days, and subjects used by local fishermen and farmers.

Interior ground floor, The Old Rorbu 1 There are a lot of rich fishing-places among the innumerable small islands in the skerries, and the narrow straits and channels give the area its special character. There are many idyllic bays where you can ancher up your boat, take a swim and recover from dayly stress.

Take 10 minutes westwards with a boat, and you are out on the North Sea, where the real big fishes of all kinds are waiting for you.

Interior top floor, The Old Rorbu 2 The Svanholmbua has four dwelling units (in Norwegian called: Rorbu). Two of them are kept in a traditional fishermen’s shanty-style in an old boat-house refurbished 1997 into two high-standard dwelling-units.

Two new houses are under construction and will be completed till May 2003.
